A Real Lichfield

GravestoneA lichfield is an old term for a graveyard; that's way in "Halloween" Michael Myers was incarcerated in Litchfield, Il (which doesn't have a psychiatric hospital, just a regular one).

Several months ago I was visiting Washington, Missouri, and stopped at a park downtown, near the Missouri river. My pug needed to fertilize the ground.

There was a monument in the park, which I assumed was a war memorial. It wasn't.

The park had at one time been a graveyard. The city dug most of the coffins up, but not all of them. There were still several, if not more, bodies in the ground. Only now it was a park.

I thought that was pretty cool. Here were childrens' swings and a playground, and on top of a bunch of people planted in the middle 1890's. If that like neato, or what?

Posted by Bob Wallace, who is cracked up by all kinds of stuff in Missouri.
