Stephen King, in his book Danse Macabre, said the scariest movie villain was Alan Arkin's portrayal of Harry Roat, Jr. in Wait Until Dark.
I was a little kid when I saw the movie when it first came out, and he scared me far more than Hannibal Lecter, who is an over-the-top caricature.
King's right: Roat is nuts, terrifying, and the movie, although not at all well-known these days, is one of the scariest ever.
