The South’s biggest traitor after the War between the States was, of all people, the Vice President of the Confederate States, Benjamin Judah. After the war he fled the country, never to return.
He lived in England, then France, and never returned to the U.S.
I don’t find this amazing, since all politicians are the same, no matter how far back into history you go..
He was also one of the South’s biggest slave-owners, if not the biggest, since rich political types always try to use the law to exploit whomever they can.
Posted by Bob Wallace, who figures all traitors are also cowards, at least in Judah’s case.
The liberal aristocratic people of the south considered him to be brilliant and resourceful. He's the guy who agreed to free the slaves if England would come in on the Southern side. I don't think he was a coward at all -just really smart. Much too smart to be Sec. of War. He was hated by the entrenched fire-eaters because he was a Jew and a foreigner. He should have been Sec. of State to begin with and had the power to cut deals with the French and British from the first.
